On my travels, I will want to record what I see and be able to present it well. I don’t have much experience in photography, other than taking the occasional snap on my phone.

Many of the websites I see use drone footage to showcase what has been experienced. For me that’s the way to record great images in real time. In addition, they also allow you to survey the surrounding areas when you’re off road. Areas, that cannot been seen directly from your van if the terrain is not flat or obscured by obstacles such as trees. The advantage being you don’t miss a great place to see and stay for a while.

I’ve researched the available drones on the market. The DJI Mavic Air 2 , newly released is the one for me. At £769 it’s not cheap but it is good…very good in fact and all the reviews are ‘bob on’!

So I will be buying this drone, which is well sort after, with many supplier currently out of stock. I’m going to go with the combo package at £949. It comes with a number of accessories making it great value as the accessories bought individually would cost way in excess of £949.

As many of you will re-call ‘numpties’ flew drones around some airports in the UK last year. For safety reasons airports closed leading to travel chaos. Since 30th November last year, drones over 250g need to be registered with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Users are subject to a £1000 fine if they fail to provide proof of registration when asked by the police . Registration is on line and needs to be completed before flying any drone and costs just £9. (register-drones.caa.co.uk)

Its a simple process., however first you have to take an on line test based on the drone and model aircraft code found on the website.

I’ve done it. I am a registered flyer (flyer ID FLY-ZKGTGM expires 13th June 2023) and operator (operator ID OP-FHCVLMC expires 13th June 2021). All I need now is the drone. Which I hope to have enough money for soon.

In the meantime, need to do some learning. What a great resource you tube is! The plan is to gain experience in flying and editing videos when we can get across to Tudweiliog in North Wales, where we have a caravan. Plenty of open space on the farm to get some good shots

I’ll keep you all posted when I have the drone. When I’ve saved up enough, which should be in another 2 months, hopefully Wales will be back open. Then I’ll buy it and get down there!.

There will be plenty of posts thereafter of my drone trials and tribulations for sure…..
